Choosing your clothing for an African Safari

Going on a safari holiday\y can be an extremely exciting time and although you may not currently be able to go or are having to post pone your trip, that doesn’t mean that you cannot start to plan ahead. One important thing to consider when going on a safari is that you take the right clothing and equipment. You need to ensure that you are comfortable on the safari trip as wearing shoes that rub you or being too hot will only make your experience less enjoyable which is certainly not what you want.

The type of clothing to take on your safari holiday will depend on the time of year you are going and what type of safari you are going on. But there are some pointers that should be followed regardless of when or where you go. When going on any safari you want to try and blend in with your surroundings as much as possible. To do this you want to wear natural coloured clothing such as khaki. These colours will match the shrubs and land meaning you are less likely to be spotted by the wildlife or to startle them.

Always pack layers as the weather conditions can vary greatly. You should ideally wear breathable layers that will keep you cool in the hot afternoon sun. If you are setting off early on your safari then you may find the mornings quite cool and require an extra layer or two.

How is the pandemic affecting Safari bookings?

A safari holiday is something many of us dream to be able to do. It really is a magnificent experience that will stay with you forever. Since the Covid outbreak, the safari industry has been hit hard. Many flights have been stopped to and from Africa (which is one of the most popular places for a safari), people have had holiday cancelled and are scared to book again until they know what is happening.

All of this has had a huge impact on the national parks and the safari companies that rely on the tourism industry to keep going.

All of these companies are starting to really struggle and without the income from visitors, they are worried that the funds will soon run out. Although the safaris are there to allow people to view these amazing animals in the wild, they also often pump a lot of the profits back into conservation and looking after the environment that these animals live in. Without this money, many people are concerned that their work will have to stop which could be hugely detrimental to the already declining numbers of many species. We can only hope that this time will pass quickly and that income will soon start to pour in again.

When is the best time of year for an African Safari?

Although many of us are not able or not happy to travel too far for a holiday this year, that does not mean you cannot start to plan for next year. An African Safari is often a once in a lifetime opportunity that should not be missed. It is said to be one of the most amazing types of holidays you can go on.

Depending on what type of safari you want to do and what animals you wish to see will help you decide on what time of the year to visit South Africa. During the months of May through to September, is the dry season. This is actually classed as their winter as although it is dry, the temperature drops during this period. There is virtually no rainfall during this winter period therefore animals often gather around predictable water sources, making them easier to find  and more predictable on a safari trip.

The summer months are usually April through to October and although this time of year can be very hot it is also often quite wet. This can attract different wildlife to the area but also with the vegetation thriving in these conditions, make it harder to spot some of the animals.
