Unusual Safari Animals

If you are going on an African safari holiday then you will probably be expecting to see some magnificent sites. The wildlife is fascinating and with many safari tours, you will get to see the usual animals such as the lions, elephants and tigers etc. but what about the more unusual animals.

Nocturnal, secretive and decreasing in numbers, the Pangolin is difficult to spot in the wild. The animal is covered in scales that overlap and when it feels threatened it rolls up in to a ball that is very hard to penetrate to protect its underside.

The Pangolin typically walks on its hind legs and uses its tail for balance and can be found in South Africa. Although this may not have been one of the first animals that came to mind when you pictured yourself on a safari, they really are worth checking out. With numbers decreasing we really do not know how much longer they will be around.

Items to make your safari even better

When going on a safari holiday there are some items that you may want to take with you that will make your safari more enjoyable or more memorable.

One of the most important things to consider is the clothing you need to take. Depending on where in South Africa you are going and what time of year will help you decide what clothing to pack. The summer months are usually April through to October and although this time of year can be very hot it is also often quite wet and the temperature will drop a lot at night. The winter months are May thorough to September and during this time you can expect cooler, drier weather.

If you are going to start writing a journal or diary now is the time. Often you will get home and a few weeks / months down the line start to forget many of the eye opening experiences you have had on your safari holiday. Making a quick note of anything of interest will allow you to keep those memories for years to come.

Family safari holiday

If you are looking for a family adventure holiday, why not go on a safari in South Africa. Some people are unsure as to whether a safari holiday is suitable for children, but it can be a great experience. Temperatures can get extremely high in South Africa, so you do need to be careful with small children but when they get a little bit older, a safari can be just the type of holiday that the whole family will enjoy and remember for years to come.

When booking a safari holiday with children, remember to check with the lodge as many of them have a minimum age restriction. If your children are under 12 some safari companies ask for you to upgrade to a private safari vehicle for the comfort of your family and the other guests, which obviously can add additional costs to your holiday that you may not have planned for.

Driving in South Africa

If you are wishing to drive whilst in South Africa, you are required by law to obtain an international drivers permit. If tourists are caught driving without a valid permit then they will receive a fine and will not be allowed to carry on with their journey. If you wish to hire a car in South Africa then you will also be required to carry a valid international driver’s permit. As in the UK it is law to always wear your seat belt when driving.

The drive between towns in South African can be massive and although the quality of the roads is not bad it is advisable to plan your route in advance and ensure you have adequate breaks scheduled in to avoid fatigue.

Drink driving laws are extremely strict in South Africa with a maximum alcohol blood content of 0.05% with equates to roughly one glass of wine for a women and 1.5 for a man.

A rhino safari holiday

Safari holidays are extremely popular with many people looking for a holiday with a bit of a difference. The majority of us have to save up for many years to be able to go on a safari holiday, but I have not spoken to one person who was not utterly impressed with their experience whilst on Safari.

Africa is the most popular destination for safari holidays and that is mostly due to the wealth of wildlife and nature that can be observed. There are different types of safari holidays that you can do such as self-drive, guided safaris and sea life safaris.

Rhino’s safaris are also a popular choice for many but unfortunately, they may not be around for long as they are often hunted for their horns. South Africa is arguably the best place to see Rhinos in their natural habitat and there are many companies that offer specific Rhino safari holidays.
