Volunteers needed for safaris

Safari holidays are said to be one of the best vacation experiences you can have. The chance to come up close to the wildlife in its natural habitat and even see animals you may previously never have had the opportunity to do so, is enough to attract many people year upon year.

You may be surprised to find out that you can become a volunteer at a safari location all over the world. South Africa is the most popular destination for a safari holiday and if you do decide to become a volunteer you will probably be based at one of the many national wildlife reserves that are situated across the country.

Being a volunteer usually means you will not get paid and in this case, you may have to make a contribution towards flights and accommodation, but this is usually a lot less than you would pay if you went on a holiday there and the opportunities are vast.

Self-fly safaris

When you think or a safari holiday you probably assume you will be sat in the back of a four by four being driven around by a tour guide. If however you are a pilot then you have the added options of a whole new safari holiday in South Africa. Self-fly safaris offer a new experience and one that will not disappoint. Having the opportunity to discover the amazing wildlife and beautiful scenery like never before seen (compared to that of a diving safari).

With a standard safari you will usually go to a travel agent and work out an itinerary for your safari trip. You will plan where you are going to stay and book your flights from place to place but if you are a pilot then you can have an aircraft at your disposal. Renting an aircraft will give you the opportunity to go wherever you want to and chose your accommodation when in Africa. You will have all the freedom you need to make your choices at the time rather than months or even years in advance.

What is the best weather for a safari?

Safari holidays are often said to be one of the best experiences you can have on a break away. The do not come cheap but many people chose to do one for a special occasion such as a honeymoon or birthday.

Knowing when and where to go can be difficult but if you spend a little bit of time doing some research and reading reviews, you can soon figure out which is going to offer you the experience you are looking for.

South Africa is the most popular location for a safari holiday and that is contributed to by the climate in the area that allows for the vegetation to flourish and in turn the wildlife. The seasons in South Africa are very different to ours with their summers being warm but very wet and winters cooler (not cold) buy dry. Different seasons offer different advantages depending on what you want to see.

Africa’s Endangered Creatures

The list of seriously endangered animals around the world can be a sobering read and many of the African animals found on that list are some of the most iconic, with the likes of the Black Rhino, Mountain Gorilla, Rothschild’s Giraffe and African Wild Dog now critically endangered. There are also many more lesser known but no less precious creatures facing extinction.

While it may be too late for some species, with the White Rhino now reduced to just two individuals in captivity, there may be hope for some if their fortunes can be turned around. While giving to relevant charities is a great way to help, a safari holiday could also help too. By turning the natural habitat and the creatures that live there into a precious commodity, money from tourism gives locals the chance to make a decent living from the land without having to use potentially destructive farming method. Governments will also be compelled to protect the natural environment as a pillar of their country’s economy, and hopefully give endangered animals a second chance.

Insurance for a safari holiday

Whenever you go abroad on holiday you should always ensure that you have valid travel insurance to cover you whilst you’re away. Many banks are now offering free travel insurance as part of your bank account privileges, but you need to check what exactly you are covered for and if it only covers you or you and all your family.

If you do not have valid insurance you may find yourself liable for thousands of pounds worth of medical bills should you be involved in an accident resulting in hospital treatment needed. Travel insurance often also covers you for loss of luggage, holiday cancellations and emergency accommodation.

If you are going on a safari holiday then you will need to notify your insurance company as you may find that your current policy doesn’t cover you and you need to upgrade or go elsewhere. If you do need to go elsewhere then always use a comparison site to see what the best deals are around.
